DNP Essential IV:
Information Systems / Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care

  1. Design, select, use, and evaluate programs that evaluate and monitor outcomes of care, care systems, and quality improvement including consumer use of health care information systems.

  2. Analyze and communicate critical elements necessary to the selection, use and evaluation of health care information systems and patient care technology.

  3. Demonstrate the conceptual ability and technical skills to develop and execute an evaluation plan involving data extraction from practice information systems and databases.

  4. Provide leadership in the evaluation and resolution of ethical and legal issues within healthcare systems relating to the use of information, information technology, communication networks, and patient care technology.

  5. Evaluate consumer health information sources for accuracy, timeliness, and appropriateness                                                                                                                                                               (AACN, 2006)

Exemplar 1: Assessing eHealth apps for usability, educational quality, clinical benefit, and engagement

eHealth developments have elevated the importance of assessing the extent to which technology has empowered patients and improved health (Kontos, et al., 2014). This paper draws on existing research and evidence to create a measurement tool that assesses how users interact with eHealth apps through the criteria of 1.) useability, 2.)
education, 3.) engagement, and 4.) clinical benefit. 

Exemplar 2: Creating a Referral: Clinical Workflow Process

This workflow was designed to direct, and evaluate a quality improvement process that promotes effective patient care through a referral process. The workflow has multiple steps from start to finish.

Exemplar 3: Knowledge, information and data: screening for social determinants of health in pediatric Type 1 diabetes

This group paper provides data, information and knowledge from existing literature and research to explore whether screening for social determinants of health (SDOH) supports pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who are at risk for uncontrolled, emergency glycemic events.
